This work presents in some depth a comprehensive Natural Language Understanding (NLU) system devised by the author that can account for the linguistic principles of Tamil in computational phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics and also define suitable computational algorithms from a linguistic perspective. The author has brought to bear an inter-disciplinary focus to natural
language processing and the understanding of natural languages by computers. The latest computational theories and linguistic principles have been employed in this work in a very systematic and comprehensive manner to illustrate how language can be engineered and automated in novel ways using computers.
